Case File: Anna Svirsko
The following are excerpts taken from transcripts of a conversation with a Carnegie Mellon student.
Name: Anna Svirsko
Year: Freshman
Major/Minor: Mathematics
Hometown: Johnstown, PA
Why Carnegie Mellon?
I chose Carnegie Mellon because when I came to visit the campus, I had the opportunity to sit in on a calc class and I was able to understand what the professor was teaching! Also, I felt comfortable and I could easily see myself here for the next four years.
How did you choose your major?
I have always loved mathematics and I decided that if there were one thing I could do for the rest of my life, math would be it!
What do you do for fun during the week, in addition to your homework?
I hang out with my friends. Usually we watch a movie or play games. Sometimes, we go out to eat and do a little shopping.
What is your favorite class? Please describe.
Concepts! It's a required class for math majors. Basically, you do a ton of proofs and learn the basics of mathematics. It is really hard at times and definitely one of my most challenging classes but when you understand everything, it is a ton of fun!
Are you planning to work on any research/internships?
I definitely would like to intern somewhere, I am just not sure of my summer plans yet.
What is your favorite thing to do in Pittsburgh (or favorite place off-campus)?
My favorite thing so far this year had been Light Up Night downtown. Lights for the holiday season are lit up in PPG Plaza, fireworks and music. You can even ice-skate in the middle of the city!
What is your favorite memory of Carnegie Mellon, so far?
Freshman Orientation week! There is no work and it is a ton of fun meeting new people and making new friends that will last a lifetime!
If there was one thing you could tell a prospective student about Carnegie Mellon, what would it be?
College is a once in a lifetime experience an you don't want to regret anything. Make sure you are outgoing and willing to embrace every moment of it. Find a group of people who are there for you and supportive of you.
