When you visit campus, take some time to explore the city as well. You'll soon see why Pittsburgh was rated one of the most livable cities in America.

The 'Burgh Boring? Balderdash!

Our current students enjoy free access to Pittsburgh's public transportation with their Carnegie Melon I.D. Buses stop right on campus, so there is easy access to any of the following hot spots in Pittsburgh:

Northside

  • Heinz Factory - Heinz Ketchup was founded in a suburb of Pittsburgh in 1869 and is now a $10 billion global company.
  • Steelers, Pirates and Penguins - Professional sports teams are just a few of Pittsburghers many passions. All venues are located a few miles from campus.
  • Andy Warhol Museum - A museum dedicated to the Carnegie Mellon alumnus, Andy Warhol, showcases timeless collections of the twentieth century artist. The Warhol Museum in one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
  • National Aviary - Over 600 birds have landed in Pittsburgh's backyard! Visitors have the chance to feed these exotic and endangered species while learning about their habitat and natural behavior.

Downtown

  • Heinz Hall and The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra - Located in Pittsburgh's Cultural District, 200 shows and performances are staged every year. The Center for the Performing Arts is visited by more then a half-million people per year.
  • The History Center - The largest history museum in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has received many local, state and national awards for its exhibits, programs and publications.
  • Point State Park - Located where the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers meet. Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle is the location for the annual Three Rivers Arts Festival, the Pittsburgh Marathon and the Three Rivers Regatta.
  • The Benedum - Home to the Pittsburgh Orchestra, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.
  • Strip District Markets - A landmark neighborhood where visitors can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from local farmers, including international cuisine and antiques.

East Neighborhoods

  • Kennywood Amusement Park - One of the top ranked amusement parks in the nations, Kennywood is a national and state historic landmark.
  • The Waterfront Shopping and Entertainment - Located in Homestead, this area provides diverse shopping, entertainment and food, along with Sandcastle, a water-front water park, just minutes from downtown.
  • Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium - The Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium is committed to education, research and wildlife conservation. It is one of only six zoo and aquarium combinations in the country.

South Side

  • Station Square - Enjoy riverfront shopping and dining or sail along the three rivers aboard The Gateway Clipper Fleet, Pittsburgh's own river cruise line.
  • SouthSide Works - SouthSide Works is a one-of-a-kind area for national and local retailers, exclusive restaurants and high-end urban living units, within the fabric of the well-known South Side community.

Oakland

  • Carnegie Museums of Art & Natural History - From dinosaurs to contemporary art, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh allow visitors to explore and learn about the past, present and future.
  • Phipps Conservatory - Houses the botanical gardens with exotic flowers, natural oddities, butterflies and beautiful scenery, right next to campus.
  • Carnegie Mellon University - Campus is located 5 miles from downtown.
