Grants & Scholarships

Carnegie Mellon University is happy to make available to its qualifying admitted students both institutional grants and scholarship opportunities in order to help lower the cost of a Carnegie Mellon education. The benefit of grants and scholarships to the admitted student is that neither amount has to be paid back - they are free money!

Grant dollars are those institutional resources that the university awards to a student when they demonstrate a financial need via the financial aid process. Students expecting to receive grant money (or any financial aid award) should complete and submit all required documentation in order to receive a financial aid award letter.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of exceptional academic and non-academic achievement without regard for a family’s financial need. There is no separate application process for scholarships at Carnegie Mellon University; all admitted students automatically receive consideration and are notified of scholarship awarding when they receive their decision letter. The exception to this is the Presidential Scholarship. To be considered for this award, you must submit a completed FAFSA, which will provide information about additional qualifications regarding aid eligibility required to be considered for this scholarship opportunity. Unlike other scholarship notification which will occur when students receive their decision letters, Presidential Scholarship winners will receive notification with their financial aid award letter.

Please be aware that External Transfer applicants are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) Scholarships

Air Force ROTC Scholarships

Two-, three- and three-and-a-half year scholarships are available to qualified undergraduate and graduate Carnegie Mellon students who join the Air Force ROTC program. Scholarships range from $15,000/year toward tuition, plus $600 for books/year and a monthly tax-free allowance that ranges from $250-400/month depending on your year in school. Students are required to attend AFROTC courses at the University of Pittsburgh, which are described in Carnegie Mellon' course catalog under Aerospace Studies. Completion of the AFROTC program leads to a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and a starting salary of approximately $40K/year.

Army ROTC Scholarships

The Army ROTC offers two-, three- and four-year scholarships to qualified students. The scholarships cover full tuition and fees per year plus $900 per year for books. Scholarship students also receive allowances of $2,500 - $4,800 per year. These scholarships are based on student merit, not parent income. There is no obligation incurred for any freshmen students. To become eligible for a scholarship, some of the criteria are as follows:

U.S. citizen
Minimum SAT score of 920 on the Critical Reading and Math sections
Minimum GPA of 2.5
Good physical health
Full-time student status

Naval-Marine Corps ROTC Scholarships

The NROTC offers two-, three- and four-year scholarships based on competitive national and regional selection. While on a Naval scholarship, the student will receive full tuition (including all related fees), a textbook stipend of $750 per year, a monthly stipend (starting at $250 per month freshman year and increasing to $400 per month by senior year) and full active-duty pay and benefits while on summer training cruises.

Special scholarships are available to minority students and students who are interested in careers as nuclear power officers. These special scholarships are available to students who have completed at least one term of academic college course work.

Andrew Carnegie Scholarship Program

The Andrew Carnegie Scholarship, which is worth half the cost of tuition, recognizes exceptional academic/artistic talent and personal achievements without regard to your family's financial need. Each year, Andrew Carnegie Scholars enter our first-year class, enrolling in business, computer science, engineering, the fine arts, the liberal arts, information systems and the sciences. If you're selected and maintain outstanding academic performance, you'll continue to receive the award through your four years of undergraduate education at Carnegie Mellon. Winners will be notified in their letter of admission.

A Carnegie Mellon University Scholarship is worth at least half the cost of undergraduate tuition for four years, to students who enroll in business, computer science, engineering, the fine arts, the liberal arts, information systems and the sciences. This scholarship is granted without regard to your family's financial need. Winners are selected from a group of finalists who meet the criteria listed below and will be notified in their letters of admission.

Judith Resnik — Challenger Scholarships

To recognize the pioneering spirit and outstanding academic and personal achievement of students committed to study in computer science, engineering or science. Carnegie Mellon offers the Judith Resnik — Challenger Scholarships, which will cover half the cost of undergraduate tuition for four years. These awards are presented without regard to a family's financial need and are renewable for four years of undergraduate education at Carnegie Mellon, provided students maintain outstanding academic records. Winners will be notified in their letters of admission.

To be considered for the scholarship, you must:

Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Exhibit excellence in academic achievement
Receive exemplary recommendations from teachers and counselors
Enhance your school or community through personal involvement
Demonstrate a strong sense of personal integrity
Apply for undergraduate study to Carnegie Institute of Technology, Information Systems, Mellon College of Science or the School of Computer Science

Presidential Scholarships

Presidential Scholarships are awarded to artistically and academically talented middle-income students who qualify for little or no need-based financial aid. Unlike our other academic scholarships, you must apply for need-based financial aid to be considered. (This verifies that you are not eligible for significant financial assistance.)

You must submit the 2008-09 FAFSA in order to be considered for the Presidential Scholarship. If you are awarded the Presidential Scholarship, you must submit all of the required Carnegie Mellon and Federal Student Aid forms and tax documents before the scholarship will be credited toward the student's account. Winners will be identified in their notification of financial aid.
