Community and the Environment
Community Service
www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/assistant-dean/CommunityService
Carnegie Mellon encourages and cultivates student interest in community service opportunities. In addition to ongoing volunteer opportunities, students can participate in programs including Service Day during first-year orientation, Service Saturdays and Alternative Spring Break Trip – Habitat for Humanity.
Environmental Stewardship
The university has become a leader in environmental stewardship through innovative practice, policy, education and the “greening” of our campus. Wind power is used to meet part of the university’s total electricity needs. New House is the nation’s first “green” dormitory receiving a silver designation from the Green Building Council. Work in sustainable design, solar houses and green design can be found on campus.
Carnegie Mellon Eco-Reps
www.cmu.edu/eco-reps
The Eco-Reps program was started in 2005 as a peer-to-peer environmental education and action program within the residential halls, sororities, fraternities, apartments and housing co-operative. Eco-Reps encourage their peers to live in a more sustainable way by hosting events, dialoging and organizing field trips.
Once housing accommodations are made, students can apply to become an Eco-Rep and make an environmental impact!
