A Day in the Life of Sinduja Srinivasan

Year: Senior
Age: 21
Major: Biology & Economics
Hometown: Buffalo, NY

6:30 AM

Sinduja is feeling good about getting up in time to do her early morning gym run. She gets to Skibo Gym and grabs her usual treadmill next to Dr. [Eric] Grotzinger from the Mellon College of Science. Even after three years, she is still a little weirded out to see her Associate Dean running along side her every morning! She showers quickly and jogs across campus.

9:00 AM

She’s just in time for her Physical Chemistry (p-chem) quiz. It’s nothing too difficult. She’s been keeping up with the problem sets so it’s business as usual.

11:30 AM

Starving! Sinduja had to skip breakfast this morning. Luckily, it’s zucchini sandwich day at La Prima in Wean Hall, which sounds delectable to this vegetarian. They have the best sandwiches on campus. She grabs lunch to go and eats it on the green grass of the Cut, trying to soak up the beautiful weather. She does some reading for her Immunology class, but is so relaxed that she actually nods off for a couple of minutes...

1:15 PM

Luckily one of her friends and fellow Peer Health Advisor walks by and wakes her by imitating bagpipes. Not the most comfortable way to wake up, but effective nonetheless. She and her friend walk briskly toward the Mellon Institute for their Journal Club seminar. As a Bio major, she’s been looking forward to this week’s topic—the use of machinery cells for the process of intracellular membrane fusion.

4:30 PM

Sinduja, along with some of her friends from the MOSAIC Planning Committee, attends a Women’s Leadership Program (WLP) reception for the chance to reconnect with friends made during the WLP team-building activities during her sophomore year. She’s happy any day to take advantage of the opportunity to mingle, chat and munch with the strongest, most involved women faculty and students on campus.

6:00 PM

Sinduja stops by the Fence where Pi Kappa Alpha (PiKA) is hosting a barbeque. Everyone is savoring the newly longer spring days. Skies are clear and the food is free, and she gladly partakes until she remembers that she is behind on the Small Oakland Houses newsletter, one of her responsibilities as a Community Advisor (CA). Back at her 1-bedroom apartment in London Terrace, she finds that there is just enough time to finish the newsletter before the evening festivities.

9:00 PM

One of the Resident Assistants (RA) is hosting a program in the house lounge. Sinduja is watching the movie “Rounders” with about 12 of her housemates. They hope to pick up some tips for the rounds of poker they are playing—for candy, not cash!

12:30 AM

Having eaten her winnings (a fairly large pile of M&Ms), Sinduja makes herself go back to her room and get ready for bed. She has a full plate tomorrow. In addition to classes, she’s tutoring several peers in writing at Mudge Hall and besides, she needs some shut-eye if she wants to be up in time for her run with Dr. Grotzinger!
