Test Requirements

Each undergraduate college at Carnegie Mellon requires that you submit either a SAT Critical Reasoning Test or an ACT test with Writing in order to be considered for admission. In addition to these tests, all academic programs (non-CFA options) also require that you take two SAT Subject tests. Please refer to Academic Requirements to learn which tests are required for the various programs.

Carnegie Mellon also has specific criteria established for reviewing Advanced Placement Tests, the International Baccalaureate, standards for Placement/credit for college-level work and the Cambridge General Certificate of Education.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Carnegie Mellon may grant advanced placement and credit for scores of four and five on exams taken in the CEEB Advanced Placement program. When you take these tests, be sure you request that the results be sent to Carnegie Mellon. We'll receive your scores in early summer. Our academic deans will evaluate your scores and let you know late in the summer if AP credit will be awarded.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Carnegie Mellon also recognizes the International Baccalaureate Examinations. We may grant advanced standing and/or credit in various fields for scores of six or seven on the higher level examinations. Send the results of the IB exams to Carnegie Mellon, and the appropriate academic dean will evaluate your scores. We'll let you know in the late summer if credit has been awarded.

Placement/credit for college-level work

We may grant placement or credit for college work you've completed in high school. Have your college transcript(s) sent to the Carnegie Mellon Office of Admission for transfer credit evaluation and advanced placement. Please also send a copy of the course catalog.

As a safeguard for engineering and science students for whom calculus credit is granted and by whom may feel uncomfortable with the material, you may move into a lower level course in the sequence, and we'll adjust your credit.

Cambridge General Certificate of Education

Carnegie Mellon recognizes the Cambridge GCE A-Level (advanced level) examinations in various higher-level subjects and may grant advanced placement and/or credit for exemplary grades.
