Intercultural Communication Center
The Intercultural Communication Center (ICC) offers credit and non-credit classes, workshops and individual appointments to help non-native speakers of English succeed in academic programs at Carnegie Mellon. Support services include a Writing Clinic (individual help with academic writing assignments), language workshops and tutoring, placement interviews to evaluate spoken language, and the ITA Test, a screening test for any non-native speaker who will work as a teaching assistant.
It is important to note that there is no formal English as a Second Language (ESL) program in place at Carnegie Mellon. That is why it is very important than non-native speakers demonstrate a level of proficiency with the English language when they apply.
If your native language is not English and your SAT Critical Reading Test results are less than 600, you are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Carnegie Mellon requires TOEFL scores of 250 or better on the CBT TOEFL, 600 or better on the pencil and paper TOEFL, 86 or better on the IBT TOEFL and an IELTS score of 7 and above. Please send these scores to the Office of Admission no later than January 1.
