What Do We Want to See

Carnegie Mellon University reviews many factors when completing transfer admission decisions. These factors could be divided up roughly into three areas: academic performance, non-academic performance and standardized testing results. Under the heading of academic performance, we will look closely at your college grades, college recommendations, high school grades and test scores.

Tip While Carnegie Mellon does request that you submit academic information from your high school experience, we rely more heavily on your academic progress in college/university to determine your readiness for transfer to Carnegie Mellon. Students who did not perform as well as they would have liked in high school can demonstrate their academic readiness via their college experience and not be heavily penalized for their high school work

For non-academic performance, we look to see if you have been involved both within the curriculum and at an extracurricular level. In regards to standardized testing results, we look to see how well you fared on all standardized testing you completed. The combination of all three factors allows us to make a well-rounded and nuanced decision in regards to your application. However, all decisions are contingent first and foremost upon space availability within a program. If no space is available, then applications will not be reviewed for that program.

Tip To be academically competitive for many of the programs at Carnegie Mellon, we expect a certain level of curriculum completion (depending upon which major you hope to transfer into), particularly in the math and science areas. We would highly encourage you to contact our Office of Admission if you have questions about where you should be in your curriculum to be competitive for transfer consideration. Also, you can find information regarding the curriculum development of our various majors by viewing our Undergraduate Course Catalog.

Internal Transfers

Enrolled students at Carnegie Mellon University are granted the opportunity to transfer internally to another major here at the university if they both meet the requirements for transfer into their new major and there is space available within their new major. Unfortunately, although we attempt to make possible all internal transfers, we cannot guarantee that internal transfer will be readily available for all interested students due to space restrictions within our programs. Historically, certain programs have proven to be exceptionally difficult to transfer into once you are enrolled at Carnegie Mellon. The Office of Admission, along with the faculty and staff of Carnegie Mellon, strongly discourages students from enrolling at Carnegie Mellon under the sole pretense of transferring to a new and different major (as this transfer can never be guaranteed).

How to Prepare

In preparation for your transfer application process to Carnegie Mellon University, you should first be aware of the many documents that you are required to submit for your application to be complete. Your application review cannot be completed without all required documents having been received by the assigned date. It is essential that you familiarize yourself with these required documents. The late submission of required documents can significantly hamper our ability to provide you with a timely decision.

Tip Transfer into mid-first year is highly unlikely and therefore discouraged. We generally encourage students to complete AT LEAST a year of schooling at their current institution before we will consider them for transfer to Carnegie Mellon.
Tip Certain documents (like high school transcripts and standardized score reports) can be hard to come by for students who are long removed from these environments. We highly encourage students in this situation to contact these respective institutions very early in their transfer process to secure these hard to find documents in time for our application deadlines.
Required Documents
  • Common Application
  • Carnegie Mellon Supplement
  • Personal Statement
  • Applicant Personal Evaluation Form or School Report (from Common Application)
  • Transcripts from ALL colleges/universities attended
  • An official high school transcript
  • Teacher Recommendation
  • Official SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing results and SAT Subject Test score reports (if applicable, see Test Requirements and official TOEFL or IELTS score report (see International Applicants)
  • Course catalog containing descriptions of all courses taken
Tip If you have not previously completed the SAT Reasoning test, the ACT test with Writing, or the SAT Subject Tests and are applying for transfer to Carnegie Mellon, DO NOT complete those tests now. These tests are designed to gauge your abilities at a very specific time during your educational journey. They will not be as useful to us if you complete them once you have already enrolled in a college/university. However, if English is not your first language and you have either not taken a TOEFL exam or have not scored a 600 or higher on the Verbal section of the SAT Reasoning test, then we would require you to complete a TOEFL exam or other qualifying language exam.
Tip If you are currently not enrolled in a college/university, we would still appreciate your efforts to have recommendation forms filled out by individuals who can attest to your strengths in an academic context. Barring this, use your best judgment and have supervisors, peer leaders, etc. complete your recommendation forms. However, Section IV of the Applicant Personal Evaluation Form must be completed by an official from the last college/university in which you were enrolled.
Tip If you are submitting documents for application review that are not in English, these documents must be translated for our application review committees. This includes all academic materials.

Please note: if you have extreme difficulty submitting or attaining any of the above-mentioned documents, please contact our Office of Admission at 412-268-2082 to explain your circumstances to an Admission Counselor and receive further instruction.

  • Before preparing your application materials for transfer to Carnegie Mellon, please familiarize yourself with our deadlines and available majors. Certain major options are only available at specific times. Late applications will not be accepted!
  • If your application review requires an audition or portfolio/project review, be certain to schedule this portion of the review by visiting our College of Fine Arts Admission Procedure Web site.
  • Several months prior to your deadline, begin to accrue all of the required documents that you may have a greater degree of difficulty acquiring (these generally include high school transcripts, official test score reports, etc.).
  • Be certain to make copies of all the documents you submit in case something is mishandled or misplaced!
  • Submit all required documents by the stated deadlines. Call our Office of Admission well in advance of the deadline should you have any difficulty in completing your application.
  • If the Office of Admission notifies you that something is missing from your application, be certain to respond in a prompt and timely manner by submitting the missing documents. Applications cannot be considered (and are eventually rejected) if we do not have all required documents.
Tip While we attempt to release all transfer admission decisions as soon as we can, it is entirely possible that you may not receive your admission decision until after certain deadlines for other institutions. We apologize for this in advance but due to the sheer volume of materials it is extremely difficult for us to render timely decisions for all transfer applicants.
