Applying for Aid
Carnegie Mellon follows a need-blind admission policy, which means we don’t admit students based on their families’ ability to pay for their education. Applying for financial aid will have no affect on your chances for regular admission. It may have an affect, however, on those students we are able to admit from the waiting list. We will determine your eligibility to receive a financial aid package – a combination of federal, state and Carnegie Mellon funds.
Unfortunately, not everyone who applies for financial assistance receives an award, or package, from Carnegie Mellon. It is important to note the difference between your family’s eligibility for financial assistance and the amount you consider to be your financial need. You may have a figure in mind as to what your family can contribute to educational costs. However, based on your family’s income and assets, your eligibility for aid may be less than you think. Your estimation of what you can reasonably contribute may be different than what the formulas tell us – either less or more.
To apply for financial aid at Carnegie Mellon, we will need the following completed forms to calculate your eligibility:
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form provides colleges and universities with data to determine your family’s ability to contribute to your educational expenses. You may submit the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov
- Federal Income Tax Returns or Foreign Tax Returns from both the parents and students (when applicable) and W-2 Forms from parents.
- Carnegie Mellon Financial Aid Application, which is used to verify information from your FAFSA, and to give us additional information about your household size, the number enrolled in college and sources of untaxed income. It can be completed electronically from Where Am I In the Process by clicking on the Financial Aid button. You will need your Admission ID number to login.
