Name: Raihan Islam

Major/Minor: Information Systems

Why Carnegie Mellon? While I had heard about Carnegie Mellon, I didn’t know too much about it. I did know it’s great for Computer Science, Engineering, and the Fine Arts. It’s diverse in educational fields, so there are so many people with knowledge and fun perspectives to offer. I think Carnegie Mellon is unique because of all the different people, clubs and educational fields. They make the school a big mix of everything that students should be exposed to! How did you choose your major? In February, I decided that my heart belongs to computer science/information systems, not engineering (primarily because of my background in web design). Do you live on- or off-campus? On, I wanted to experience a dorm environment. I am a residential assistant this year. What do you do for fun during the week, in addition to your homework? I participate in a lot of clubs, and I love to talk to and hang out with people. Are you involved in any campus organizations? I am an officer in the New House Council, an Admission Assistant and a member of the Game Creation Society, Math Club, and E.A.R.T.H. organizations. What is your favorite class? Please describe. I look forward to my programming courses because I love to program as an occasional hobby. I put extra time into these courses. Are you planning to work on any research/internships? I participated in an internship with Intel Corporation last year(Intel First-Year Research Experience) and as an independent study, I have been working on RaiBot. What are your plans after graduation? I’m thinking about Graduate School. What is your favorite memory of Carnegie Mellon, so far? In October, last year, New House Room 112, the fourth and fifth floors took the Fence for eight days. I camped out there three nights in a row! Are there any fun traditions that you want future Carnegie Mellon students to follow? Take the Fence with a bunch of people and bond! If there was one thing you could tell a prospective student about Carnegie Mellon, what would it be? If you ever change your mind about what you want to study, Carnegie Mellon is awesome for almost any field of study, and if you aren’t going to change what you are studying, there are a lot of opportunities to expand your knowledge and work experience.
