The following are excerpts taken from transcripts of a conversation with a Carnegie Mellon student.
Name: Rachael Stutzman
Year: Freshman
Major/Minor: Music
Hometown: Princeton, NJ
Why Carnegie Mellon?
I chose Carnegie Mellon for several reasons: it has a great music program, it promotes a conservatory in a university setting and it has a strong campus and community identity near a city.
How did you choose your major?
I decided to major in music during my senior year of high school because I love to perform.
Do you live on- or off-campus?
I live on-campus in Morewood A tower so I could be close to school and experience dorm life.
What do you do for fun during the week, in addition to your homework?
I practice my clarinet, go out to dinner/lunch with friends, and also like to shop and go to the movies. Also, I really enjoy venturing off campus - going to places like the Elbow Room and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Are you involved in any campus organizations?
I am involved with Orientation, Untitled (art sale), I created a concert series and am active in the Dance Marathon.
What are your plans after graduation?
I am planning to pursue a Masters in Arts Management from Heinz School.
What is your favorite memory of Carnegie Mellon, so far?
Carnival, Crew team, parties and friends.
Are there any fun traditions that you want future Carnegie Mellon students to follow?
Three words: Paint The Fence.
If there was one thing you could tell a prospective student about Carnegie Mellon, what would it be?
The diverse composition of students at Carnegie Mellon really gives you an opportunity to define what your identity and supports you to do better than your best.
